Born Healthy
Born Healthy is a Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada and sponsored by the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association. Additional funding for Born Healthy comes from community groups such as the Ladysmith Hospital Auxiliary. There are 46 other Canada Prenatal Nutrition Programs in B.C.
Born Healthy provides education and support for pregnant women and new mothers. Particular emphasis is on developing a healthy lifestyle in order to have the healthiest baby possible. Nutrition is stressed. Born Healthy provides nutrition education and counseling, a free lunch every Wednesday, and food vouchers and prenatal vitamins for those who need financial assistance. Social support is also an important part of Born Healthy. Every Wednesday we have a drop-in time from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The first hour includes a guest speaker or activity, we then have lunch and lastly a nurse from Public Health visits and is available for questions and information sharing. These drop-in times are important for meeting new friends and sharing information.
Born Healthy is located at 12 Buller St. The house is an ideal location for our program as it has a living room area for socializing, play room for children, space for offices, kitchen and a back yard which includes a large vegetable garden. Born Healthy shares the house with the Triple P Parenting Program, the Ladysmith Dads Support group, the Mother Goose Program, and several other community programs. Born Healthy is staffed by a Coordinator/Nutritionist (Sandra Marquis) and two Outreach Workers (Laura Pelletier and Estelle Seguin). The Program is open Tuesday and Wednesday, year round.
