Island Time Head Huggers

What is Head Huggers?

This is a volunteer based program where individuals can work from their home or get together in groups to knit, crochet or sew hand made hats for people who have lost their hair from surgery, disease or accident.

Head Hugger hats are then distributed to hospitals, oncology offices, hospices and so on and are given to patients at no cost in hopes they will bring some warmth, comfort and a smile to someone who has lost their hair.

Head Huggers are made in all sizes from children's sizes right through to adults.

Why are they needed?

Hair loss is a frequent side effect of chemotherapy, brain surgery or burn wounds to the head. Individuals who suffer the trauma of sudden hair loss experience feelings of fear, humiliation and embarrassment. The hats provide warmth, comfort and restore dignity.

How can I get involved?

If you have the yarns or fabrics and like to knit, crochet or sew and have the time and expertise to make hats we have the patterns. We need volunteers to help with the production of these hats. Will you consider joining us in this worthwhile endeavor?

If you are a person who needs a Head Hugger - you may call 250-245-3079 for further information.

GUIDELINES

Criteria to make the hats:

  1. Must be hand made.
  2. Must be new.
  3. Preferably washed.

Ideas:

  1. Softer yarns are more comfortable.
  2. Provide thinner, seamless, non lumpy caps for sleeping and increased comfort.
  3. Label hats that contain wool.
  4. Hats made with thinner yarn are better for warm weather use. Cotton is best as it is cooler than most other types of yarns.

Should you wish to donate financially to this worthwhile endeavor, please make cheques payable to Ladysmith Resources Centre Association - tax deductible receipts will be issued upon request.

Funds are required to mail hats to hospitals and oncology clinics and cover the cost of advertising.
